How to remove dust from a phone speaker
- Brush the grille gently with a soft, dry toothbrush to loosen surface dirt.
- Turn the volume to maximum and face the speaker down.
- Press Start in Dust mode and let the 60 second sweep finish.
- Tap the phone lightly against your palm, grille down.
- Lift remaining particles with a piece of low-tack tape or cleaning putty pressed lightly on the mesh.
Why a sweep works better than one tone for dust
Every particle stuck in the mesh has its own size and weight, so each one shakes loose at a different frequency. A single tone only hits a few of them. A sweep from 200 to 1200 Hz passes through the right pitch for almost all of them.
The Dust mode also uses a sharper wave shape than the Water mode. It produces extra overtones that add fine vibration at the mesh surface.
Signs your speaker is blocked by dust
- Maximum volume is lower than it used to be.
- Music sounds thin, with less bass than before.
- You hear a rattle or buzz at certain notes.
- The grille looks grey or fuzzy under a bright light.
- The problem built up slowly with no water involved.
Keep the grille clean
Run the dust cleaner sound once every few weeks if you carry the phone in a pocket or work in a dusty place. Avoid sharp tools, alcohol sprays and compressed air. They can tear the mesh or push dirt further in.
