How to clean an Android phone speaker

  1. Press volume up, then raise the Media slider to maximum. Ring volume is separate and does not count.
  2. Turn off Do Not Disturb and disconnect Bluetooth devices.
  3. Switch the Vibration option on in the tool.
  4. Hold the phone with the speaker grille facing down.
  5. Press Start and let the full cycle play.
  6. Wipe the grille with a dry cloth and run the speaker test.

Sound plus vibration

Android lets websites use the vibration motor, so this tool can pulse the motor in time with the sound. The motor shakes the whole phone body while the speaker cone pushes from inside. Together they shift droplets that sound alone leaves behind.

If your phone does not vibrate, check that vibration or haptics is enabled in system settings and that battery saver is off.

Notes for popular brands

  • Samsung Galaxy: if Absolute Volume or a Volume Limit is set under Sounds, turn the limit off for the cleaning run. Some Galaxy phones also show a moisture detected alert for the USB port. That alert is separate from the speaker.
  • Google Pixel: Pixels have stereo speakers, so the earpiece is cleaned at the same time. Turn off Adaptive Sound during the run.
  • Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco: MIUI and HyperOS include a built-in Clear speaker option in Additional settings. It plays a 30 second tone. Use this page when you want dust and earpiece modes as well.
  • OnePlus, Oppo, Vivo and Realme: disable any Dolby or sound enhancer profile for the run, since it can filter out low frequencies.

Do I need to install an app from the Play Store?

No. Speaker cleaner apps play the same kind of tone and usually add ads and permissions. This page does it in Chrome with nothing installed.

Which browser should I use?

Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox, Edge and Brave all work. Vibration works best in Chrome and Samsung Internet.

My phone has the speaker on the back. How should I hold it?

Hold the phone flat with the screen facing up so the rear grille points at the floor.

Is it safe for a phone without an IP rating?

The sound itself is safe for any phone. If a phone without water resistance got properly wet, power it off and let it dry fully, since water may have gone beyond the speaker.
